You’ve Come A Long Way, Ducky

Today – Sunday, September 17, 2017 – is Ducky’s 5th Gotcha Day.  These five years have flown by at the speed of light, in spite of some days that seemed never ending.

When I look back on your first weekend with us – those two days you spent tormenting and pestering Callie and Shadow – I can’t help but laugh. You were such a little demon, but cute as a button.

And that fateful Monday morning when your picture showed up in my email from the shelter. You were on their list of “most urgently in need of rescue or adoption”. In those first several weeks that you were part of the family, I questioned my own sanity constantly. Even Dr. Steve marvels at my steadfast dedication to our “wild child”. 😉

Callie did her best to help me raise you. And, frankly, she did a much better job of it than I did. She taught you how to be a family dog. She tried to teach you to play nicely with Shadow. And Lordy, how she tried to teach you some manners. When all else failed, she disciplined you as only another dog could.

Your relationship with Shadow has improved substantially since Callie got her angel wings. Even though you had some months mixed in when you were a true brat toward Shadow, you have really come a long way in improving your attitude toward your sister.

We still need more work on your acceptance of other humans in my presence, but we’ll get there.

All in all, you’ve grown into a truly good dog. You have your bad days – like Daddy and me – but we’re not looking for perfection. You have given us unconditional love, have entertained us and made us laugh ourselves silly, and have perplexed us with your attitude at times. Yet all you ask for in return is a place in our hearts and a safe, warm place to call home. And you know you have both.

We – Daddy, Mommy, Shadow, and Angel Callie – all love you Ducky Doodle! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

And, last but certainly not least, another sweet rescue girl celebrated her first Gotcha Day yesterday (September 16th). Miss Elsa aka “The Little Ninja” over at Tails Around the Ranch. Happy Gotcha Day Weekend Miss Elsa! You’ve come a LONG way, too, Sweetie! ❤️

Serene Saturday

It has been such a beautiful weekend so far … sunshine, blue skies, puffy white clouds …

In between games with the ball or Bounzer, the girls have been like this …

Or wanting to run the fence line with the neighbors’ bulldog, Jupiter. A quick hello is all they need, in my opinion.

There’s a nice breeze out here right now. Ducky is looking around her – nose twitching and ears moving to catch every sound. Shadow just changes position a little to get comfortable.

Just Me and My Shadow

To look at Shadow today, you would never know she was feeling a bit under the weather this past weekend.

Poor Shadow had a slightly upset digestive tract this past weekend. Thankfully, it only manifested itself via the back end so I didn’t have to call the vet via his smartphone. A few Imodium tablets – broken in half – and a slight change of diet had her feeling better by Sunday night.

I did take her to the vet on Monday morning, though, as a precautionary measure. After all, next Sunday is her half-year birthday. (And Callie’s second birthday in Heaven.) My sweet girl isn’t getting any younger.

We decided to keep her on the blander diet for a while, just to help her system stabilize. We’ll keep track of her weight, too, because the vet feels she lost a little too much weight since her annual exam in January. He did a thorough hands-on exam of her abdominal area and everything felt fine, no change. So we’re increasing her daily calories a bit. We don’t want her losing any more muscle mass than an aging dog normally would lose.

After taking Ducky to daycare and having breakfast with hubby this morning, I put Shadow’s harness on her and we went to the ballfield across the road for a walk. Just the two of us. We walked around the field twice and came home. Then we came out to the back yard to play.

Again. Just me and my Shadow. I love this sweet Golden Girl. She lights up my days and sweetens my nights. My sunshine comes from the love light in her eyes.

Sunny Saturday

After several days of overcast skies and thunderstorm-filled late nights, we finally have a most-welcome visitor: Mr. Sun! And he’s supposed to stick around for the whole weekend.

Anyway, not one to miss an opportunity to spend time outdoors, I brought the girls back out in the yard – along with their yard toys – so the three of us can enjoy the sunshine.

The girls are watching our neighbor mow his back lawn. They were barking at the lawn mower for a little while but have both settled down.

I’m just sitting here soaking up the sun and fresh air while I can. Once mid May rolls around it’ll probably be too hot and muggy to stay out here all day.

Finally Some Sun!!

Thursday night we had a huge, long, drawn-out downpour. It was so heavy, fast, and furious that the porch floor flooded and some of the mess came in the house under the inside door. UGH! I’ve had the ceiling fan running non-stop trying to dry out the carpet by the door. It is drying, but it’s taking a while. And it stinks. Like stale, dirty water. I’m going to open the windows a little later to get some fresh air in the room.

Yesterday we had more rain, but thankfully not enough to re-flood the porch quite as bad. Just enough so the girls and I couldn’t get in more than five minutes of playtime outside.

Thankfully the rain stopped overnight and the muddy water on the porch was able to drain out through the holes we made a few years ago.

About ten minutes ago, the sun broke through the clouds and the sky has actually turned a pretty blue again.

Not willing to miss the opportunity to work off some more of Ducky’s pent-up energy – and because Shadow told me she needed to answer a nature call – I quick-like-a-bunny ushered the girls downstairs, out the back door, and into the yard. I threw Ducky’s Kong Bounzer across the yard for her to pounce on and then did a sidearm fastball pitch of Shadow’s ball that Peter Moylan would be proud of. (Peter was, until not long ago, an Atlanta Braves relief pitcher who I really like. Pee on the Braves for trading him AGAIN!)

Well, I have a few errands to run so I need to cut this short. (You’re Welcome! BOL). Have a great Saturday everyone!!
